About Tanikely
Nosy Antanihely, “the island of the small earth” or Nosy Tanikely acquired several years ago the status of Marine and Coastal Protected Area. The park’s management is entrusted to the “Tanihely National Park” association composed of three institutional entities among Madagascar National Park. Despite its small size, Nosy Tanikely is recognized for its remarkable marine and land biodiversity. Scientific studies certify that the site is one of Madagascar’s most important in terms of marine characteristics; many holidaymakers thus visit the park every year. In the agenda: sunbathing, diving/snorkeling, picnics and walks toward the island’s peak. The reserve has an exceptional marine wealth. Nosy Tanikely has a spectacular coral reef, which truly is an aquarium full of life. You will see many colored fishes and many species such as: sea turtles, rays, dolphins and even small harmless sharks. The island officially became a natural park in 2010 and its reserve extends over a 700 m radius around its lighthouse, which gives boundaries for the allowed diving zone.

About the Lokobe Natural Reserve

Lokobe Integral Reserve is located in the southeastern part of the island of Nosy Be north of Madagascar. It is the only protected area of this sublime tropical island and covers around 7, 4 km² of the last remaining Sambirano primary forest of Nosy Be. It is supposed to become a National Park in a couple of years, but this has not been confirmed yet. Already in 1927 this ancient forest started to be protected and in 1966 the actual Reserve was created. These humid medium altitude evergreen forests are the natural habitat for the endangered black lemur, which only occurs here and is the most representative species of the reserve. The reserve is mostly known for the black lemur. Unfortunately, only few are left. These lemurs are real beauties. The females are not black at all, but beautifully reddish brown. Apart from the back lemur, there are other nocturnal species such as the Gray-backed sportive lemur and some mouse lemurs. Lokobe is also home to some endemic birds like the Madagascar pygmy kingfisher or the Madagascar long-eared owl, to spectacular panther-chameleons, local endemic frogs and several snakes.

What to Expect
A moderate level of exertion is required for this itinerary. The itinerary includes walks/nature hikes on dirt paths that are often over uneven terrain. Walking can be up and down steep and sometimes slippery hills, over or around exposed tree roots, and can also occasionally be off-trail where you may encounter wet leaves, tree roots and hanging vines. All guests must be able to climb steps unassisted.

Days are often long, and most wildlife-viewing activities are conducted on foot and require a combination of endurance, balance and a good view of the trail underfoot. Most of the required walking activities are considered moderate with regard to exertion level, though some are more difficult, particularly in the rain forests. Excursions can last several hours.

Some of the roads are winding, and guests who are prone to motion sickness are advised to carry medication for such conditions. It is common for roads to have potholes, creating bumpy driving conditions.

Depending on the time you travel, heat and humidity may be a factor making nature hikes more challenging.
