Northern Madagascar Natural History & Wildlife Safari
2019 & 2020

Overview:

This Northern Madagascar safari begins with two overnight stays in Madagascar’s colorful capital, Antananarivo before heading to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park where you have the chance to experience a true rainforest. Walking along paths you will find a dense humid forest covered with lians, moss, and fern tress. Other common plants growing here are pandanus, ravinala palm-tree, tambourissa, bamboo and some precious wood, like palisander and ebano. Andisbe is home to the large indri lemur, which is known for its distinctively loud song. Apart from the indri, another 13 lemur species inhabit these forests, such as the woody lemur, grey bamboo lemur, diademed sifaka, brown lemur, red mouse lemur, red-bellied lemur, black and white fuffed lemur and even the aye-aye. Andasibe is also home to some wonderful reptile and amphibian species, including the enormous Parson’s chameleon and the tiny nose-horned chameleon, as well as the majestic infamous boa manditia and a myriad of frogs. The colorful wildlife is topped off with more than 100 bird species and hundreds of insects, including some amazingly huge, brightly marked butterflies. After 3 nights in this area, you drive back to Antananarivo and fly to Diego Suarez where you will continue to another of Madagascar’s most diverse rainforests – Montagne d’Ambre. Here, you will find sacred caves, underground rivers, waterfalls, crater lakes and remarkable flora and fauna. Montagne d’Ambre is also home to the world’s smallest chameleons and lemurs! After spending 2 nights in this area, you depart to your next destination – the Ankarana Special Reserve, where the landscape resembles a spiky stone forest with underground riverbeds and caves. It is famous, not only for its lemurs, but the limestone tsingy and eerie bat caves. After spending 4 nights here (in both the East & West Reserves), you will then continue to the tiny fishing port of Ankify and board a boat to the idyllic Nosy Komba Island. Swap your hiking boots for flip-flops and swim, snorkel and relax in idyllic surroundings. Then, for another day of relaxation, you travel to the sandy, tropical beaches of Nosy Be enjoying the perfect beach getaway, before you return back to the capital city.

About Akarana Reserve
Ankarana Reserve is one of the most exciting reserves in Madagascar, and one of the hardest to visit. Each year more visitors make the effort, however, for the dramatic landscape of limestone pinnacles (tsingy), caves, untouched forest and a wealth of wildlife. Ankarana is thought to contain the highest density of primates of any forest in the world.

The Ankarana Massif is a limestone plateau that measures approximately 5 by 20 kilometers, and rises abruptly from the surrounding grassy plain. It is dominated by impressive formations of Tsingy. There is an extensive system of caves (with resident bats), with underground rivers. Some of the largest caves have collapsed, permitting isolated pockets of river-fed forest. Dry deciduous forest grows around the periphery of the massif and penetrates up into the larger canyons. There is an incredible diversity of reptiles and frogs, and mammals to see.

After breakfast at camp, head out with your driver/guide on a full day spent exploring the Ankarana Reserve (West) with a step on national park guide, enjoying walks and the flora and fauna that can be found in the reserve. 2nd overnight at Iharana Bush Camp on a full board basis.
