RWANDA GORILLA TREK & SERENGETI, TANZANIA SAFARI

June / July / August 2026

Day-by-day Itinerary:

Day 1 | Arrive in Kigali Rwanda

Arrive Kigali, Rwanda. VIP meet and greet with private transfer to hotel. Overnight at Kigali Serena Hotel on Bed and Breakfast basis.

Private guide driver, depart at 9AM to visit the Genocide Museum & Memorial. Lunch at Mille Collines (included) in Kigali. Afternoon at your leisure.  Overnight at Kigali Serena Hotel – Breakfast and Lunch included and Dinner on own account.

Genocide Museum & Memorial

The Kigali Genocide Memorial, established in 2004 through collaboration between Rwandan authorities and the Aegis Trust for Genocide Prevention, serves as a foundation for peace and values education in Rwanda’s national curriculum. By promoting community resilience, it offers a model for international adaptation. If peace can emerge after the Genocide against the Tutsi, it can be achieved anywhere. After the RPF halted the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, Kigali authorities designated a hillside in Gisozi for mass graves for 250,000 victims. Memorial buildings were constructed nearby, but the question of their purpose remained.

Day 3 | Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Center

9am Private Road Transfer up into the Mountains to Volcanoes National Park with a visit to Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Centre en route for self-guided tour (included). Continue to the lodge for check-in and lunch and afternoon at leisure.   Overnight in a Deluxe Room at  Five Volcanoes. All meals included.

Special features include a replica of Dian Fossey’s forest cabin and original artifacts from her work and life, a 360-degree theater featuring amazing footage of the gorillas, and a virtual reality experience.

Day 4  | Golden Monkey Trek

After breakfast we take a short drive to Park Headquarters again and meet with excellent local guides and trackers who will give a talk on the etiquette of Golden Monkey trekking. The trekking can take from 1 to 4 hours. There is a fully habituated group of the beautiful primates in the park and this is one of the only places in Africa where this activity is offered.

Afternoon At your leisure. Overnight Five Volcanoes, Fully inclusive of all meals and you will have a guide/private vehicle to/from Kigali and to and from the park entrance for Gorilla treks.

Golden Monkeys

Golden monkeys are known to have unique characters and are a rare species that are endangered at the moment and they are currently found in the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda. They are easily recognized due to the yellow patches that can be seen all over their bodies. The Golden monkeys are also known as ‘the Old world monkey’ and the only way to separate these primates from others is by their noses. There is a unique character about the golden monkeys and that is most of the monkeys have their nostrils pointing to the sides but if you look closely at the golden monkeys, their nostrils face upwards. Golden monkey trekking in Rwanda mostly takes place in the Volcanoes which is found in the Virunga Mountains and it has only one session per day which starts in the morning.

Day 5 | Gorilla Trek

After breakfast we take a short drive to Park Headquarters and meet with excellent local guides and trackers who will give a talk on the etiquette of gorilla trekking. We then hike into the forest to where the gorillas were seen the night before and track from that point.  The trekking can take from 1 to 6 hours and climb to altitudes not in excess of 8,858 feet.

The terrain is rough and at times muddy.  Although the hike is physically demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make the trekking worthwhile. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world. Picnic lunches are provided and it is important to take plenty of water. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film are recommended. It can rain at a few minutes notice, hence waterproof clothing is a good essential including waterproof bags for cameras and film. Please note: plastic (e.g. carrier / shopping) bags are illegal in Rwanda.

After the trek road transfer to Volcanoes Lodge for the afternoon at your leisure and overnight, on a fully inclusive (FI) basis.

About Gorilla Trekking

Tracking gorillas through the dense African forests is a magical experience. Nothing can prepare you for the impact of encountering a fully-grown silverback male, up to three times the size of an average man (adult males can weigh up to 200 kilograms!), yet remarkably peaceable, playful and tolerant of human visitors.

It is a privilege to spend an hour sitting with and watching these wild relatives. Only eights visitors are allowed per gorilla group each day, and too minimize possible transmission of human diseases, visitors are asked to maintain a distance of 7 meters (about 22 feet) from the gorillas. Typically, tracking can take from 3 to 8 hours and requires some agility and fitness; however, no one should feel deterred from missing this once in a lifetime experience!

Day 6 | Gorilla Trek

Second Morning Gorilla Trek. In the afternoon visit Iby’lwachu Cultural Village.

The Iby’Iwachu Cultural Village

The village is located near Parc National des Volcans in Kinigi. It’s has been developed to display local and traditional lifestyles, activities and artefacts.  Local communities benefit and earn directly from this community-based tourism initiative to improve their socio-economic ways of living and as an incentive for conservation of the gorillas and their habitat.

Given the cultural value attached to it, the Iby’ Iwachu Cultural Village is a platform to showcase the Rwandan ways of living, traditional lifestyles and dances to tourists and community members in a way that encourages them all to be a part of it while generating income for poor local people. The money generated is used to support their household income-based activities; encourage sustainability; reducing unemployment and empowering local people politically, economically and socially to alleviate poverty (which is the underlying cause of poaching) while developing these entities as linkages towards conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas.

Iby’ Iwachu Cultural Village gives you the rare chance to meet and interact with local people, in their environment with a taste of Rwandese culture and traditions. This has been developed by the community for the community.

After breakfast at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge, with your driver/guide, travel a few hours to Arusha in time for lunch (included) at Shanga Restaurant. Late afternoon, private road transfer from Shanga to Arusha Int. Airport for evening flight out.

Optional Balloon Safari

The adventure begins just before dawn. Departure is from a launch site behind Little Governors’ Camp. Guests assemble at the launch site for a briefing as the flames from the hot air balloon burners light the darkness as the crews inflate their craft. As the dawn breaks the hot air balloon fills and then rises.

Suspended in a basket beneath the rainbow-coloured canopy, you’re off for a wildlife viewing adventure with an entirely different perspective. What amazes most first-time balloonists is the absolute stillness: the silence as you float above the plains, the forest and the rivers of the Masai Mara.

After about an hour or so, your balloon safari finishes with a flourish. In the time-honoured tradition of balloon flights the world over, toast your return to earth with sparkling wine and enjoy a delicious breakfast that is set up and served at a very special spot. The experience ends with a game drive back to your camp.

*Please note: This itinerary is subject to change. In the spirit of expedition travel, plans may change slightly to take full advantage of encounters with the destination and its people, culture, and wildlife.
