Day-by-day Itinerary:

DAY 01 – JANUARY 18, 2023 | Nairobi, Kenya
Arrive in Nairobi late evening and transfer to the
Tamarind Tree for your overnight.

DAY 02 – JANUARY 19, 2023 | Nairobi / Loisaba Conservancy
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for our flight to Laikipea, a 57,000-acre wildlife conservancy and working ranch. Check in to Loisaba Tented Camp, set on the edge of an escarpment that overlooks a busy waterhole. After lunch and a chance to settle in, embark on our first game drive.

DAY 03 – 04 – JANUARY 20 & 21, 2023 | Loisaba Conservancy
Enjoy two full days searching for wildlife during morning and afternoon safaris. Two permanent rivers and several springs attract a wide variety of wildlife to the area throughout the year. With over 260 birds and 50 mammal species recorded, search for endangered reticulated giraffes and Grevy’s zebras, along with herds of elephants, prides of lions, and cheetahs. In addition to traditional game drives, you may also wish to explore on foot, mountain bike, horseback, or even by camel.

For a unique experience, choose to spend the night in one of the camp’s Star Beds, handcrafted four-poster beds that can be wheeled outdoors allowing you to sleep under the vast night sky.

DAY 05 – JANUARY 22, 2023 | Laikipea
After breakfast at camp, board our flight to the 70,000-acre Mara North Conservancy, which borders the famed Masai Mara National Reserve. This private setting offers guests an intimate game viewing experience, while also providing a stable revenue for over 800 Masai pastoralists. Check in to Elephant Pepper Camp in time for lunch. Freshen up in your luxurious tent or watch for wildlife from your private veranda before embarking on an afternoon safari.

DAY 06 & 07 – JANUARY 23 & 24, 2023 | Mara North Conservancy
Morning and afternoon safaris reveal healthy populations of zebra, wildebeest, and other plains species, which attract prides of lions, cheetahs, and leopards. While the Maasai Mara is one of the most popular safari destinations in the world, Mara North has one of the lowest visitor and vehicle densities in the area, giving you exclusive access to all the action, without the crowds.

DAY 08 – JANUARY 25, 2023 | Ngorongoro
This morning we fly to Lake Manyara via Kisumu. A scenic drive brings you to the dramatically situated Entamanu-Ngorongoro. Perched high on the remote northwest rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, Entamanu Ngorongoro is the ultimate highland retreat. This the only place in the world where you can watch the sun rise over the Ngorongoro Crater and set over the Serengeti Plains. This eco-conscious camp is specially designed to provide shelter from the high-altitude sun and chilly weather in the early mornings and evenings but can also be completely disassembled to leave no mark on its pristine environment. Time permitting, visit a traditional Maasai village this afternoon.

DAY 09 – JANUARY 26, 2023 | Ngorongoro Crater
Protected from the outside world by a huge rim, Ngorongoro is the world’s largest intact caldera as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. The abundance of food and freshwater supports an amazing 30,000+ large mammals. Descend 2,000 feet into the crater for a thrilling game drive among Africa’s “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard), with a special emphasis on seeking out the rare black rhino; this area is one of the best places to find them in East Africa.

DAY 10 – JANUARY 27, 2023 | Ngorongoro Crater / Serengeti Ndutu
Take a half day walk with a guide and ranger along the highlands through acacia tree forests. Enjoy the clean air and dazzling views over the crater as well as a picnic before departing by vehicle for Olduvai Gorge made famous by Dr Leakey. Continue to the Ndutu region of the Southern Serengeti, where you’ll spend three nights under canvas at Serengeti Sojourn Camp. Moving several times a year to be in the best possible location for the wildebeest migration, this camp is a simple blend of form and function. All the comforts you need, without distancing you
from the adventure of an authentic safari
experience.

DAY 11 & 12 – JANUARY 28 & 29, 2023 | Serengeti Ndutu
The Serengeti Plains are home to the greatest concentration of large mammals on Earth, and your visit has been timed during calving season, a time that promises an exciting safari experience full of wonder and plenty of action. Enjoy daily game drives through acacia savannas and grasslands, spotting herds of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, topi, impala and hartebeest along with predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena. Hippos and crocodiles may be found along the network of rivers and lakes.

DAY 13 – JANUARY 30, 2023 | Serengeti Ndutu / Depart
After your final camp breakfast, bid farewell to your fellow travelers and board your independent homeward flight via either Nairobi or Kilimanjaro Airports.

LEX HESS
SAFARI LEADER | PHOTOGRAPHER

Lex has been a wildlife cameraman for documentaries, a renowned photographer of leopards, and a safari and tour leader in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. He’s published books on animals of southern Africa and became co-owner of a safari guide-training business that became the largest of its kind in the world. Lex’s long career in guiding hasn’t for one second dulled his love and enthusiasm for wildlife and wilderness.

“When I began this career, I was a shy kid with nothing but a pair of binoculars and an enthusiasm for birds, plants and animals. What a difference a lifetime makes.”

“We’re going to visit some of the greatest concentrations of iconic wildlife anywhere on the African continent. We’ll also see two great human/wildlife conservation models in the conservancies of Laikipia Mara North, demonstrating wildlife conservation and tourism can live hand-in-hand with local communities. Finally, we’ll get to see the massive wildebeest herds in a different setting from the traditional drama of river crossings, down in the southern extent of their range where a million wildebeest give birth every year and graze the lush grassy plains.”
