June / July / August 2025

Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga’s splendor is captured not only in its game reserves and animals, but also in its natural wonders and sweeping views. The Panorama Route’s incredible vistas throughout the lowveld reveal the beauty of the province, and as you stand at “God’s Window” you could be gazing down at heavenly perfection. From the time-worn sandstone formations and lush forests to the rivers and waterfalls pouring into sun dappled pools, this is Eden, and in its tranquility you are recharged by nature’s energy. Historic town Pilgrim’s Rest has been declared a national monument and it exudes charm and magic. Tin-roofed houses, churches and cemeteries take you back to the gold-rush past, and the police station built of dolomite rock in 1902, serves the community today. The museums and monuments offer a fascinating looking into life in a 19th century mining town as do the corrugated iron houses and wooden furnishings. Pilgrim’s cemetery holds a nostalgic note’s the “Robbers Grave” lies perpendicular, so the sun never again rises on his face. The trout-meccas of the country, Dullstroom, White River and Lydenburg offer superb fly-fishing where anglers are able to pit their skills against wily brown and rainbow trout. When dusk falls on the waters, wind down before a roaring log fire, glass of wine in hand, followed by a gourmet meal served in a stylishly welcoming environment.
Day 3 – 5 | Explore Mpumalanga & Greater Kruger National Park
Spend the next three days exploring on your own in your rental car, the Greater Kruger National Park and the Mpumalanga provenance of South Africa. Overnights at Nyaleti Lodge.
Day 6 | Greater Kruger National Park
Today transfer to the fully inclusive Simbavati Mvubu Cottage, this picturesque cottage is located in the Timbavati Private Game reserve, within the Greater Kruger National Park.
Drop Rental Car at Hoedspruit Airport and you will be picked up in a Simbavati Lodge vehicle and transferred to/from Mvubu Cottage.
Day 7 – 9 | Greater Kruger National Park
A typical day on safari starts off with an early morning open vehicle game drive, at a time when the animals are most active. A refreshing coffee stop affords the chance to listen to the sounds of the bush and admire the landscape. After some down-time and a siesta back at camp, set off again in the late afternoon when the bush comes alive and the waterholes are a magnet for thirsty animals. Sundowners as night falls, then spotlights come out in search of a new range of creatures. For those needing to expend some energy, a guided walking safari is an ideal way to learn about smaller animals and plants.
Game Drive
Game Drives will be in Open-sided 4×4 game vehicle. Your mode of transport, (or chariot as one of our guides likes to call it), is an open-sided 4×4 game vehicle with 3 rows of comfortable bucket seats in tiers. You generally head out with a maximum of 8 guests. This offers safe, yet close wildlife encounters. Guests sit up high for the best ‘spotting’ of birds and animals. There are no sides to inhibit your views and you naturally feel more in tune with nature. In the summer month, a shade top is added to protect against the African sun, but in winter it is open to the skies for the best bird-viewing and for stargazing. Your guide helps you to interpret what you see. They also communicate with other vehicles by radio in order to keep in touch with sightings nearby.
Greater Kruger National Park
As you bump along the park roads, the sun warm upon your face and air dry in the back of your throat, your senses are on high alert. This is the real Africa, cut away from the hectic pace of life, home to Africa’s Big 5. The Kruger is alive, from the nervously twitching herd of impala after a night of predator action, to the wild dog cavorting like domestic pets alongside the road. Marvel as a herd of elephant simply appear from out the bush, then silently vanish back into the landscape. With over 2 million hectares of pristine wilderness, the Kruger’s biodiversity sustains numerous species of game and birds. The dry north consists of Baobab trees, scrubland and rocky outcroppings which can be seen for miles and animals tend to gather around water sources. As you come south, the park gets busier, animal numbers increase, and the backdrop changes too grassland and acacia woodlands.
On the western borders, private reserves such as Sabi Sands and the Timbavati open onto the Kruger, offering an exclusive game experience with the flexibility of night drives and off-road 4 x 4 safaris.
Swaying to the movement of an open vehicle while wrapped warmly against the night chills, is an unforgettable experience. The call of a Nightjar darting overhead and the flash of eyes reflected from the bushes brings an entirely different twist to your safari and as you drop your head back and look up – the crisp night skies go on forever.
On Safari: Timbavati, Greater Kruger National Park
The Timbavati shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park and covers approximately 53,392 hectares. It is home to large herds of buffalo and elephant and is famous for the extremely rare white lions.
Day 10 | Greater Kruger National Park
Today you say your fond farewells as you make your way back to the airport to begin your journey home or on to your next destination. We hope you’ve had a wonderful and unforgettable stay in Southern Africa!
If you have not already returned your rental car: you’ll make your way to the car hire depot at Hoedspruit Airport to return your vehicle (or if pre-booked, your hire car will be collected from your accommodation).
*Please note: This itinerary is subject to change. In the spirit of expedition travel, plans may change slightly to take full advantage of encounters with the destination and its people, culture, and wildlife.
